I am pop symbolist. My work in the formal sense is about Structural Geometry. Intersecting lines, height, width and depth on a two dimensional plan. What I reject is that a work of art’s value derives solely from its elements of design, an academic notion, that isn’t enough for me. I want the MAGIC! I want the power to cast a spell. To literally deceive the viewer into perceiving a painted detail is real. A visual fairytale that the viewer can’t escape, all the while knowing that they are being deceived. When you embrace the symbolism and allow the the elements of design to become a TROMPE L’OEIL , an illusion conjured up from the imagination of the artist, now you are communicating in a way that everyone can understand. Ghosts from the past, visions of the future, brought into the present in a painting. Image, icon and story collected through a life in art.
" Fairy tales are the purest and simplest expression of collective unconscious psychic processes. Therefore their value for the scientific investigation of the unconscious exceeds that of all other material. They represent the archetypes in their simplest, barest, and most concise form. In myths or legends, or any other more elaborate mythological material, we get at the basic patterns of the human psyche through an overlay of cultural material. But in fairy tales there is much less specific conscious material, and therefore they mirror the basic patterns of the psyche more clearly."
